The Newman Program at St Patrick's College
Enrichment Opportunities for Newman Selective Gifted and Talented

The Newman Program at St Patrick's College

The Newman Program was established at St Patrick’s College in 2012. We were one of the first Sydney schools to take part in what was originally a research and development program, and is now a flourishing program developing across Sydney Catholic Schools.

St Patrick’s College became a fully accredited Newman school in 2015. This was an extremely rigorous process which involved external experts in Gifted education assessing the programs, policies and practices of the College with regards to gifted education. Teachers, parents and students were all interviewed regarding their experiences of the Newman Program. The College received a glowing report, stating that “the overall practice for gifted and talented education at St Patrick’s College is exemplary.”

In particular, the school was commended for:

The in-depth understanding of principles of gifted education by staff
The wide variety of objective and subjective strategies used in identification
Detailed student profiles are available to all staff, including practical strategy suggestions
Staff professional learning is informed, practical and accurate
Feedback to students is comprehensive, explicitly growth focused and reflects an understanding of the socio-emotional needs of gifted students

The aim of the Newman Program is to support the needs of gifted and talented students at St Patrick’s College. A key component of the program is the professional development of staff. Forty-five of our current staff members have training in gifted education. This means we understand the very specific academic, social and emotional needs of gifted learners. An important way to meet the needs of gifted students is to allow them to work with like-minded students. For this reason, we provide academic grouping at the College. This takes the form of the ‘Newman’ of the ‘W’ class.

Whilst we provide a comprehensive list of enrichment activities, the core component of our Newman Program at the College is an understanding of the importance of differentiation. Classwork and assessment tasks are differentiated to meet the varied needs of our learners. The key aspects of the Newman Program at St Patrick’s College are:

   Academically selected classes
   Differentiation in ALL classes
   Pre-testing, compation and acceleration
   Flexible grouping within the classroom
   Newman extension tasks
   Cross-curricular tasks

The following enrichment opportunities are offered to students at St Patrick’s College. Selection for each opportunity is based on a number of criteria; these include teacher nomination, self nomination, submitted pieces of work or performance in examinations/ assessment tasks.
